Same-East CCm legislator Anne Kilango yesterday challenged Finance and Economic Affairs minister Mustafa Mkulo to explain before the House on the staggering 216bn/- which the government disbursed ``to a few people`` 16 years ago.

Kilango issued the demand here when debating the 2008/09 budget estimates, which Mkulo tabled in Parliament on Thursday last week.

``In 1992, the government offered a total of 216bn/- to only a few people. The money has not been recovered since then,`` said Kilango without revealing the names of the ``few people.``

She expressed her discomfort over the current tendency of few people having big influence on the country`s economy.

``We should fight against this habit,`` said Kilango, and challenge the Treasury boss, Mkulo, to explain where the 216bn/- went.

She said that certain things were not right within the government cycles, asking: ``How did such a huge amount of money get lost in the Central Bank, without government blessing?``

``The government seems to be not serious on the security of the money collected from poor millions of Tanzanians. This is people`s money from all corners of the country,`` she lamented.

She cautioned that misuse and poor management of public funds degrades the image of the country before the public and international scenes.

The MP went further saying that Tanzania was not a poor nation but it was people who are poor adding that at no point there was need to have a dependent budget.

She stressed the need for improving supervision of public resources, for the benefit of the majority.

The Same East representative, cited mining and tourism as some of the areas that have not been given strong security and management.

``These sectors have not yet been managed properly, due to prevalent poor protection and management.

There are lots of money in these sectors that has not been tapped to raise our revenues,`` she explained.

On the current worldwide inflation, MP Kilango reminded the government to double efforts in supervising the country`s available natural resources.

``Let`s not leave our natural resources to foreigners. It is high time we exploited these resources to improve our economy,`` she said urging lawmakers in the House to refrain from fears by teaming up and defend the country`s natural endowment.
